Black Power Salute, John Dominis, 1968

At the 1968 Olympic Games in Mexico City American sprinters Tommie Smith and John Carlos are photographed with their fists in the air representing Black Power in America. The athletes raised their fists just moments before the Star Spangled banner began to play. Their intention was to show that even though the country is being honored Blacks in America were still being tormented and treated unfairly. John Carlos (furthest to the left) said We knew that what we were going to do was far greater than any athletic feat,”.

Around this time the civil rights movement in America is just starting to come into fruition. As well as the Black Power and Black Panther Party who's most notable action was to raise a fist in the air. This time period would then be prominent and still be brought up even in the world of today.
